As I reflect on my life, I recall a quote from Benjamin Franklin, “It's fine to do what you want to do, but sooner or later you have to do what you were meant to do.”
Early in my life, “what I wanted to do” was to be an athlete. This ultimately took me to Southwestern University to play quarterback for the SWOSU Bulldogs. Immersed in one of Oklahoma’s premiere pharmaceutical environments, it was only natural to go with the flow and get my Bachelor of Pharmacy.
After eight years as a pharmacist, I found myself with a wife, two children, and a career that most would envy. However, Franklin’s quote still screamed in my head, “sooner or later you have to do what you were meant to do." Deep in my heart, I knew it was time to make a change… be a dentist.
After graduating and getting my DDS, I was accepted into a specialty program. I was flying high with accomplishment and my dreams were within my grasp. However, after the first year of entering the program, a routine trip to the doctor jerked the rug out from under me… I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. Faced with a very personal crisis, I decided to forego the remainder of my residency and consequently, entered general practice instead. Although I was closer to my purpose in life; there was something missing and I was still not doing what I was meant to do.
After a lot of soul-searching, I found what that missing piece was…the opportunity to provide complete patient-centered care in my own practice. After much research into how I could actualize my dream; I realized there was still one more enormous obstacle to overcome… money. The financial investment to set up my office to the level I wanted to serve my community was out of reach for several years. As my spirits plummeted at this realization, fate stepped in. I ran into Dr. Brown and Custom Dental and became a partner. The structure and set-up of the Custom Dental model would allow me to do what I was meant to do. Now, the only thing missing is you!
